Lenalee was very young when she and her brother Komui lost their parents to an akuma attack. Shortly afterward, Lenalee was found to be compatible with Innocence – specifically, the Dark Boots – and taken from her brother. Forced to live at the Black Order against her will, she constantly tried to escape and run away, and may have even become relatively suicidal. Feeling they had no other choice (and being, in general, not nice people), those in supervisory positions at the Order restrained Lenalee, tying her to her bed so she could no longer escape.
This was how Komui found her three years after she was taken, bound and blank-faced, completely shut out from the world. When she came out of that state, it was to find him beside her, an employee of the Order. For a while after that, she clung to her older brother, too shy to do much else. Eventually, though, she became much more sociable, and a lot less fearful, although certain things still scare her quite a lot. She’s most commonly found bringing everyone coffee or admonishing her brother for causing trouble.
Shortly after Allen showed up at the Order, Lenalee was assigned with him to investigate the ‘rewinding town,’ a small town where time seemed not to quite stand still, but where the same day repeated itself over and over. At the source of this was a woman named Miranda and her (then unknown) Innocence, and joining the two Exorcists in the search for that Innocence was a member of the Noah Clan named Road (or Rhode) Kamelot. After a confrontation with the Noah, Lenalee was left unconscious for a time.
Shortly after her recovery, she and Allen were sent on a new mission – to seek out General Cross Marian and bring him back to Order HQ. They followed his trail (courtesy of Timcanpy) through Europe and most of Asia. They encountered further trouble in China, in the form of Suman Dark, an Exorcist who had ‘betrayed his Innocence’ and become one of the Fallen. Allen and Lenalee attempted to save him, but extenuating circumstances caused Lenalee to leave Allen to it himself.
By the time she returned with Lavi (once again led by Timcanpy), Allen was nowhere to be found, and all the record they had of what happened to him came from the recording function of the little golem. …It wasn’t pretty. Shocked but unwilling to believe it, they returned to the docks, where a representative from the Asia Branch of the Order met them and told them they would be leaving Allen behind in China.
The loss of yet another Exorcist caused Lenalee to close down, until her fellow Exorcists managed to snap her out of it. The ship was assaulted by a Level 3 Akuma, which Lenalee ended up fighting on her own, while the others held off an assault from several lower-level ones. Eventually, in order to defeat it, Lenalee forced a full synchronization of her Innocence; when she was returned to the ship, it had evolved into a strange, crystalline barrier. Once it deactivated, it left strange markings on her legs, and she found herself barely able to move them, much less activate her Innocence again. The fight also burned away most of her long hair.
The team of Exorcists reached Edo, Japan, and found themselves quite suddenly in a battle of time with the Noah aboard the Ark. Unable to do much to help, Lenalee was basically dragged along through the Ark behind the others, up until the dual battle between Lavi and Allen and the Noahs Road/Rhode and Tyki. …And that is where she enters this story.
Lenalee is a kind person who hates to see anyone she is close to get hurt. She’s extremely protective of her friends, her ‘family’ – to her, they are the world, and she would in fact choose them over the world, because a world without them in it wouldn’t be worth having.
Other than that, though, she presents a pretty fearless exterior, willing to take serious risks to protect the people she loves, and not letting anyone step in to do what she feels she can handle herself. She’s fairly no-nonsense, as well, and intelligent, although she has a tendency to believe in a few superstitions. She is rather fragile under the ‘stone walls and steel’ façade, but not if she can help it.
Also, her favorite food is chocolate cake.
As per this little adventure, she has no memory of any of this, and is no longer in possession of her Innocence.
